<![CDATA[AMERICAN NORTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT SHEEP ASSOCIATION

During the 2025 National Show, held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), the American North Country Cheviot community proudly welcomed two outstanding individuals into the Hall of Fame: Dee Samson and Dr. Thomas Barkham. Their inductions recognize decades of dedication, leadership, and lasting contributions to the North Country Cheviot breed.

Dee Samson
The Samson North Country Cheviot flock traces its roots to the 1990s in Sonoma County, California, before relocating to Oregon’s High Desert in 2003. From the beginning, Dee Samson established her program on a strong genetic foundation, drawing from respected bloodlines developed by Joan Roberts, Don Kessi, and Herbert Poole.
Alongside her daughter Sarrah, and later her grandson Emmett, Dee expanded the flock by incorporating rams from the Midwest and East Coast. Throughout this growth, she remained firmly committed to the core values of the North Country Cheviot breed. Her flock has been managed on a pasture-based system with an emphasis on sound structure, strong maternal instincts, and adaptability to challenging climates.
This approach has resulted in a flock recognized in the show ring, while also being highly sought after by both commercial and purebred producers. Dee’s sheep are respected for appearance, functionality, and productivity.
Beyond her own operation, Dee has given generously of her time and knowledge. Over the years, she has served in board positions within the American North Country Cheviot Breed Association and has been a dedicated mentor to numerous junior members. Her encouragement and guidance have helped ensure a strong and lasting future for the breed.
With 2025 marking Dee’s retirement from breeding North Country Cheviots, it is fitting to honor her commitment. Her induction into the Hall of Fame stands as a thank you for her dedication, leadership, and service to the breed.

Dr. Thomas Barkham
Dr. Thomas Barkham has long been recognized as a premier breeder of North Country Cheviot sheep, with a program built on vision, curiosity, and an unwavering pursuit of quality. When establishing his flock, Tom went to lengths to secure genetics. He traveled as far as Prince Edward Island, Canada, to attend the first sale of English imported North Country Cheviots to North America.
Tom credits Lloyd Skinner of Canada as a major early influence, and those foundational decisions are reflected in the coast-to-coast bloodlines represented in his flock today. Together with his family, Tom has enjoyed success in both the show ring and the commercial sector. His sheep have earned national champion titles and more than 36 first-place cups.
Equally important as these accomplishments is Tom’s character and generosity within the sheep community. Known for his passion for functional, high quality livestock, he has always been a strong advocate for youth and young breeders. Many in the breed can recall their first purchase from Tom or a moment when he offered guidance, encouragement, or a helping hand.
For decades, Tom Barkham has exemplified what it means to be a steward of the breed—combining excellence in breeding with mentorship, integrity, and genuine care for others. His induction into the Hall of Fame is a well earned recognition of a lifetime devoted to the advancement of the North Country Cheviot.

A Moment to Celebrate
The 2025 National Show provided a meaningful setting to celebrate these two inductees, whose legacies will continue to shape the American North Country Cheviot breed
